Matthaeus 9, 9 - 13

Als Jesus durch die Stadt ging, sah er den Zolleinnehmer Matthäus am Zoll sitzen. Jesus forderte ihn auf: "Komm, geh mit mir!" Sofort stand Matthäus auf und folgte ihm.
Später war Jesus mit seinen Jüngern bei Matthäus zu Gast. Matthäus lud viele seiner Kollegen ein und andere Leute, die ebenso verrufen waren.
"Weshalb gibt sich euer Lehrer mit solchem Gesindel ab?" empörten sich die Pharisäer.
Jesus hörte das und antwortete: "Die Gesunden brauchen keinen Arzt, sondern die Kranken!"
Und er fügte hinzu: "Begreift doch endlich, was Gott meint, wenn er sagt: 'Nicht auf eure Opfer oder Gaben kommt es mir an, sondern darauf, daß ihr barmherzig seid. Meine Aufgabe ist es, Sünder in die Gemeinschaft mit Gott zu rufen und nicht solche, die ihn schon kennen."

Matthew 9, 9 - 13

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples.

When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and `sinners'?"

On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

But go and learn what this means: `I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
